When glucose in the body dips down than normal levels, the condition is termed as hypoglycemia. There are two types of hypoglycemia known as the organic hypoglycemia and reactive hypoglycemia. Of the two types organic hypoglycemia is caused due to the illness of certain organs such as the liver and need right medication or surgery along with hypoglycemia diet. Whereas, reactive hypoglycemia is the result of body’s over reaction to certain conditions that try to balance the excess obtained from diet by releasing adrenaline. In both the cases, hypoglycemia diet plays a major role in curing the ailment.

Like many other diet programs hypoglycemia diet has to be designed according to the patient’s individual criteria. The uniqueness of individuals makes it impossible to suggest a general hypoglycemia diet for all. However, you can easily determine your hypoglycemia diet if you have a thorough understanding of the ailment and eating habits. Carbohydrates and proteins are a basic source of energy and their break down is slow thus helps maintain optimum glucose levels in blood. Some of the foods recommended in hypoglycemia diet include pasta, grains, potatoes, legumes, nuts, seeds, and low-fat meat. As glucose from complex carbohydrates and protein take longer time they are preferred over simple carbohydrates. This works out better for reactive hypoglycemia

Fiber plays an important role in the hypoglycemia diet. Fiber-rich fruits and vegetables can prevent symptoms of the ailment between meals. It is due to the ability of fiber that slows down the absorption of sugar during the digestive process.

Low-fat content foods, such as lean meat, skimmed milk and eggs can be included moderately in hypoglycemia diet. However, use of oils should not exceed the prescribed limits.

When it comes to addition of sweeteners in hypoglycemia diet, substances like sorbitol, saccharin, and aspartame that do not contain sugar or calories can be used. However, consult your doctor if you aren’t sure about their usage.

Things that should be avoided in hypoglycemia diet are as follows:
Sweeteners, such as sugar, corn sweetener, or high fructose corn syrup.
Skipping meals
Alcohol
Caffeine

While the above mentioned sweeteners increase the glucose levels rapidly, skipping meals is not good for patients with reactive hypoglycemia. It is a good practice to have frequent intake of well-balanced meals in small quantities while in hypoglycemia diet. Alcohol has high calories that can trigger hypoglycemia all by itself instantly. Caffeine is a great adrenaline stimulant and should be strictly avoided during hypoglycemia diet.
